In this paper
we summarize the researches of liquid crystal (LC) adaptive optics(AO) in astronomical applications. Dual frequency and nematic LC materials were reported to be used in astronomical observations. However
nematic LC with its simple producing and driving method and multi-gray-level is promising in the application. We have investigated the nematic LC AO system and promoted its application for nearly ten years. Here
we reported our newest nematic LC AO system with bandwidth result of 3dB is 54.4 Hz
0dB bandwidth is 79.1Hz. 2012 IEEE.

Electric-field-induced effective anchoring energy in nematic liquid crystal is investigated taking surface and flexoelectric polarization into consideration. The analytical expressions of effective anchoring energy for both bottom and upper substrate
containing these two polarizations
are derived. The effective anchoring strength for both bottom and upper substrate is also obtained by means of a systematic method
which is relevant to magnitude of two polarizations and determined by the applied voltage U. Applying the obtained expressions into an original weak anchoring hybrid aligned nematic cell
the effective anchoring strength are determined with the different magnitudes of two polarizations and the different applied voltage U.

Proposed a new method of determining the cell thickness and the twist angle of twisted nematic liquid crystal cells
a quarter-wave plate was inserted between the liquid crystal cell and the analyzer
a stepper motor rotated the Retarder by 360
and measured the light intensity of every modulated point
solved the stokes parameters of polarization light exiting from the liquid crystal cell using Fourier analysis method
thereby determining the cell thickness and the twist angle. Experiments indicated that it is suitable for measuring the low-cell-gap accurately. In addition
it also can be applied to the measurement of the cell thickness and twist angle of single polarizer reflected liquid crystal cell.

A more exactitude C-V method to determine the elastic constants for nematic liquid crystal is discussed. For positive nematic liquid crystal(NLC)
the threshold voltage becomes uncertain when the pretilt angle is not zero
so the value of k11 must be erroneous. To solve this problem
we report the formulas about capacitance and voltage with the pretilt angle isn't zero
present the method to determine the elastic constants -k11 and k 33 simultaneously by curvefitting. We simulate and analyze the theory of this method in virtue of MatLab. The proposed method can reduce the requirement of LC cell
increase the accuracy.
