black hole physics  Low Mass X-ray Binaries  accretion  accretion  discs  stars: individual (MAXI J1820+070)  Astrophysics - High Energy  Astrophysical Phenomena  Abstract: We present high-speed optical photometry from SAAO and SALT on the black hole LMXB MAXI J1820+070 (ASSASN-18ey), some of it simultaneous with NICER, Swift and Insight-HXMT X-ray coverage. We detect optical Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) that move to higher frequencies as the outburst progresses, tracking both the frequency and evolution of similar X-ray QPOs previously reported. Correlated X-ray/optical data reveal a complex pattern of lags, including an anti-correlation and a sub-second lag that evolve over the first few weeks of outburst. They also show correlated components separated by a lag equal to the QPO period roughly centered on zero lag, implying that the inter-band variability is strongly and consistently affected by these QPOs at a constant phase lag of roughly ±Ю The synchronisation of X-ray and optical QPOs indicates that they must be produced in regions physically very close to each other  we thus propose that they can be explained by a precessing jet model, based on analogies with V404 Cyg and MAXI J1348-630.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena  Abstract: Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration radio transients of unknown physical origin observed at extragalactic distances1-3. It has long been speculated that magnetars are the engine powering repeating bursts from FRB sources4-13, but no convincing evidence has been collected so far14. Recently, the Galactic magnetar SRG 1935+2154 entered an active phase by emitting intense soft íray bursts15. One FRB-like event with two peaks (FRB 200428) and a luminosity slightly lower than the faintest extragalactic FRBs was detected from the source, in association with a soft íray/hard-X-ray flare18-21. Here we report an eight-hour targeted radio observational campaign comprising four sessions and assisted by multi-wavelength (optical and hard-X-ray) data. During the third session, 29 soft-íray repeater (SGR) bursts were detected in íray energies. Throughout the observing period, we detected no single dispersed pulsed emission coincident with the arrivals of SGR bursts, but unfortunately we were not observing when the FRB was detected. The non-detection places a fluence upper limit that is eight orders of magnitude lower than the fluence of FRB 200428. Our results suggest that FRB-SGR burst associations are rare. FRBs may be highly relativistic and geometrically beamed, or FRB-like events associated with SGR bursts may have narrow spectra and characteristic frequencies outside the observed band. It is also possible that the physical conditions required to achieve coherent radiation in SGR bursts are difficult to satisfy, and that only under extreme conditions could an FRB be associated with an SGR burst.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena  Abstract: Insight-HXMT is the first Chinese X-ray astronomical mission, launched successfully on June 15, 2017, from China's Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. Insight-HXMT was designed to have a broad energy coverage in X-rays, from 1-250 keV, with excellent timing and adequate energy resolution at soft X-rays, and the largest effective area at hard X-rays. This allows, in particular, to observe bright sources like X-ray binaries (XRBs) in their bright/outburst states with high cadence and high statistics at hard and soft X-rays at once. It was then expected that the Insight-HXMT mission will bring us new insights regarding the characteristics of several source classes. Examples include characterizing High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) and the outburst evolution of Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs). For instance, in HMXB systems, the region around their Alfven radius that is responsible to determine whether accretion or propeller occurs, or the region around the NS magnetic pole where the intense X-rays are supposed to be produced are specially appealing targets of study. For the LMXBs, the evolution the outburst and the properties of the compact objects themselves are obvious priority targets for Insight-HXMT. Due to the broad coverage in energy, Insight-HXMT is specially well suited to study the influence of thermonuclear (type-I) X-ray bursts upon the surrounding environment.

stars: magnetic field  stars: neutron  pulsars: general  Astrophysics  - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena  Abstract: In 2011 December, PSR B054-69 experienced a spin-down rate transition (SRT), after which the spin-down power of the pulsar increased by $\sim 36{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. About 1000 d after the SRT, the X-ray luminosity of the associated pulsar wind nebula (PWN) was found to brighten by $32\pm 8{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. After the SRT, the braking index n of PSR B0540-69 changes from n = 2.12 to 0.03 and then keeps this value for about five years before rising to n = 0.9 in the following years. We find that most of the current models have difficulties in explaining the measured braking index. One exceptive model of the braking index evolution is the increasing dipole magnetic field of PSR B0540-69. We suggest that the field increase may result from some instabilities within the pulsar core that enhance the poloidal component at the price of toroidal component of the magnetic field. The increasing dipole magnetic field will result in the X-ray brightening of the PWN. We fit the PWN X-ray light curve by two models: one assumes a constant magnetic field within the PWN during the brightening and the other assumes an enhanced magnetic field proportional to the energy density of the PWN. It appears that the two models fit the data well, though the later model seems to fit the data a bit better. This provides marginal observational evidence that magnetic field in the PWN is generated by the termination shock. Future high-quality and high-cadence data are required to draw a solid conclusion.

stars: neutron  pulsars: individual: Swift J0243.6+6124  X-rays:  binaries  Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena  Abstract: Based on Insight-HXMT data, we report on the pulse fraction evolution during the 2017-2018 outburst of the newly discovered first Galactic ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) source Swift J0243.6+6124. The pulse fractions of 19 observation pairs selected in the rising and fading phases with similar luminosity are investigated. The results show a general trend of the pulse fraction increasing with luminosity and energy at supercritical luminosity. However, the relative strength of the pulsation between each pair evolves strongly with luminosity. The pulse fraction in the rising phase is larger at luminosity below 7.71 × 1038 erg s-1, but smaller at above. A transition luminosity is found to be energy independent. Such a phenomenon is first confirmed by Insight-HXMT observations and we speculate that it may have relation with the radiation-pressure-dominated accretion disc.

Radio transient sources  Magnetars  Soft gamma-ray repeaters  2008  992  1471  Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena  Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics  Abstract: The Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 has been reported to produce the first example of a bright millisecond-duration radio burst (FRB 200428) similar to the cosmological population of fast radio bursts (FRBs). The detection of a coincident bright X-ray burst represents the first observed multiwavelength counterpart of an FRB. However, the search for similar emission at optical wavelengths has been hampered by the high inferred extinction on the line of sight. Here, we present results from the first search for second-timescale emission from the source at near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths using the Palomar Gattini-IR observing system in the J band, enabled by a novel detector readout mode that allows short exposure times of ?0.84 s with 99.9% observing efficiency. With a total observing time of ?12 hr (?47,728 images) during its 2020 outburst, we place median 3Ҡlimits on the second-timescale NIR fluence of ?18 Jy ms (13.1 AB mag). The corresponding extinction-corrected limit is ?125 Jy ms for an estimated extinction of AJ = 2.0 mag. Our observations were sensitive enough to easily detect an NIR counterpart of FRB 200428 if the NIR emission falls on the same power law as observed across its radio to X-ray spectrum. We report nondetection limits from epochs of four simultaneous X-ray bursts detected by the Insight-HXMT and NuSTAR telescopes during our observations. These limits provide the most stringent constraints to date on fluence of flares at 1014 Hz, and constrain the fluence ratio of the NIR emission to coincident X-ray bursts to RNIR ? 0.025 (fluence index ?0.35).

Insight-HXMT  Geant4 simulation  Background observation  Astrophysics  - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics  Abstract: Insight-HXMT, the first X-ray astronomical satellite in China, aims to reveal new sources in the Galaxy and to study fundamental physics of X-ray binaries from 1 to 250 keV. It has three collimated telescopes, the High Energy X-ray telescope (HE), the Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME), and the Low Energy X-ray telescope (LE). Before the launch, in-orbit backgrounds of these three telescopes had been estimated through Geant4 simulation, in order to investigate the instrument performance and the achievement of scientific goals. In this work, these simulated backgrounds are compared with in-orbit observations. Good agreements are shown for all three telescopes. For HE, (1) the deviation of the simulated background rate after two years of operation in space is 5 % from the observation  (2) the total background spectrum and the relative abundance of the 67 keV line show long-term increases both in simulations and observations. For ME, (1) the deviation of simulated background rate is within 15 % from the observation, and (2) there are no obvious long-term increase features in the background spectra of simulations and observations. For LE, the background level given by simulations is also consistent with observations. The consistencies of these comparisons validate that the Insight-HXMT mass model, i.e., space environment components and models adopted, physics processes selected, and detector constructions built, is reasonable. However, the line features at 7.5 and 8.0 keV, which are obvious in the observed spectra of LE, are not evident in simulations. This might result from uncertainties in the LE constructions.

Gamma-ray bursts  Soft gamma-ray repeaters  Magnetars  Gamma-ray  transient sources  629  1441  992  1853  Astrophysics - High Energy  Astrophysical Phenomena  Abstract: The giant flares of soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) have long been proposed to contribute to at least a subsample of the observed short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this paper, we perform a comprehensive analysis of the high-energy data of the recent bright short GRB 200415A, which was located close to the Sculptor galaxy. Our results suggest that a magnetar giant flare provides the most natural explanation for most observational properties of GRB 200415A, including its location, temporal and spectral features, energy, statistical correlations, and high-energy emissions. On the other hand, the compact star merger GRB model is found to have difficulty reproducing such an event in a nearby distance. Future detections and follow-up observations of similar events are essential to firmly establish the connection between SGR giant flares and a subsample of nearby short GRBs.

桑沟湾  微塑料  潮滩  丰度  空间分布  Sanggou bay  microplastics  tidal flats  abundance  spatial distribution  In recent years, research on microplastics pollution in the marine environment has been increasing, but studies on microplastics in water bodies and sediments of the bay under the influence of high-intensity human activities are still rarely reported. In this study, the pollution characteristics of microplastics in the wayer and sediments of Sanggou bay were investigated in December 2017,after the harvest of large-scale aquaculture, with the aim to study the effects of aquaculture activities and hydrodynamics on pollution characteristics and spatial distribution of microplastics in the bay. The results showed that the types of microplastics in the water and sediments of Sanggou bay were mainly fibers, fragments, films, foams and particles. The microplastic abundances in the water and sediments were 1.8 ~ 31.2 N/L,31.2 ~ 1246.8 N/kg,respectively. The average particle sizes of microplastics in water and sediments were 0.51 0.20 mm and 1.54 1.02 mm,respectively. The results of spatial distribution of microplastics in Sanggou bay showed that the high abundance area mainly appears in the inshore waters, and the abundance of microplastics tends to decrease from the inner areas of estuary to the outshore areas. The heterogeneity of microplastic abundance and spatial distribution in Sanggou bay is mainly affected by human activities such as aquaculture, living and shipping,as well as hydrodynamics. In the future, fine sampling and analysis are needed to fully understand the temporal and spatial distribution of microplastics pollution in the bay areas.

低氧  群落结构  群落恢复  敏感种  机会种  hypoxia  community structure  community recovery  sensitive species  opportunistic species  Hypoxia is a common phenomenon in the world's oceans, especially in the shallow waters of coastal zones. Rates of hypoxia are increasing due to global climatic changes and anthropogenic activities. Hypoxia can cause mass mortality of marine animals and can have severe negative impacts on marine ecosystems. To better understand the effects of hypoxia on macrobenthic communities, a survey was carried out in the Muping Marine Ranch (Yantai) during June, August and September of 2016. Results showed that seasonal hypoxia led to changes in benthic community structure, especially in terms of species composition and dominant species. The dominant species were Polychaeta Lumbrinereis latreilli, Sternaspis scutata and Mollusca Endopleura lubrica in summer. The opportunistic species Lumbrinereis latreilli increased, whereas, sensitive species such as Leptomya minuta, Glycera chirori, Upogebia major, Pontocrates altamarimus, Eriopisella sechellensis decreased during the hypoxic period of August. Hypoxia also reduced biodiversity indices. The effect of hypoxia on abundance and biomass were not significant, mainly because of the increase in the opportunistic Lumbrinereis latreilli, which counteracted the decline in abundance and biomass of other species. Individual physiological tolerance to hypoxia was different among species. Lumbrinereis latreilli showed higher tolerance to hypoxia in dissolved oxygen (DO) = 1.0 mg/L compared to other species. Some sensitive species, such as Leptomya minuta, Upogebia major, Pontocrates altamarimus and Eriopisella sechellensis showed lower tolerance when DO < 2.5 mg/L. When DO increased to 2.5 mg/L, the macrobenthic community start to recover gradually. The recovery extent and time needed were closely related to the degree of seasonal hypoxia.
