A method to find the optimized parameter values of passive dynamic walking biped is presented. The effects of biped physical parameters on the stability property of passive gaits are studied by simulation experiments. The chosen parameters include the mass distribution  length of leg and slope angle. The stability property of passive walking limit cycles is used as criterion of optimization calculation  including the orbital stability described by eigen-values of linearized Poincare map and the global property described by size of attraction region. The simulation results show how the stability of limit cycle varies when physical parameters of the passive biped change. The work is useful to explore the inherent property of passive dynamic walking and can be used as an important instruction in the mechanical design of biped robots based on principle of passive dynamic walking. A digital mirror device (DMD) based light projector was developed as the target generator in modulation transfer function (MTF) measurement. In order to overcome the sampling-scene phase effect in MTF measurement of sampled imaging systems  a method using random targets is introduced to yield a phase-averaged MTF. The main potential problem of implementing this method is the fact that the stationary assumption of the random targets may be vitiated in practical measurement  especially in field test due to the ill condition. We provide an efficient model-independent way of analyzing and isolating the spectral contents arising from these additional contributions to MTF measurement. Algorithms with adaptive parameter selection were also developed for spectral estimation of the test image in order to overcome the challenge brought by the size limit of the test matrices for one certain field of view derived from the isoplantic region. The MTF measurement of a CCD video imager is used to demonstrate the measurement technique and illustrate the benefits over other methods. In order to validate the results  comparisons have been made between MTF measurements of imager implemented using this method and bar target direct measurements. 2010 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Small satellites are capable of performing space explore missions that require accurate attitude determination and control. However  low weight  size  power and cost requirements limit the types of attitude sensor of small craft  such as CCD  are not practical for small satellites. CMOS APS is a good substitute for attitude sensors of small craft. Some of the technical advantages of CMOS APS are no blooming  single power  low power consumption  small size and little support circuitry  direct digital output  simple to system design  in particular  radiation-hard characteristic compare with CCD. This paper discusses the application probability of CMOS APS in star tracker for small satellites  further more  a prototype ground-based star camera based on STAR250 CMOS image sensor has been built. In order to extract stars positions coordinates  subpixel accuracy centroiding algorithm has been developed and tested on some ground-based images. Moreover  the camera system star sensitivity and noise model are analyzed  and the system accuracy is been evaluated. Experimental results indicate that a star camera based on CMOS APS is a viable practical attitude sensor appropriate for space small satellites.
